IN HONOR OF NATIONAL AUTISM
MONTH
AUTISTIC AND SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN HAVE
FABULOUS DAY AT THE ZOO
DAVIE, FL--Nearly 100 autistic and special needs children were treated
to a free day at Metrozoo, Sunday, April 25th in recognition of National
Autism Month. The children and their families were taken by bus from Davie
to Metrozoo for a special field trip at the zoo.
“
Families with special needs children often have difficulty taking them
to tourist attractions,” said Valerie Herskowitz, sponsor of the
trip said. “This private outing allowed these families a much needed
fun day. Kids, parents and siblings had a wonderful time!”
The field trip to the Zoo was organized and underwritten by Ms. Herskowitz,
a veteran speech therapist, who is the parent of an autistic child and
owner of Dimensions Therapy Center, which offers speech and occupational
therapy, as well as computer-based therapies. Ms. Herskowitz is the founder
of the non profit National Autism Registry and a licensed speech therapist
in practice for 25 years.
Ms. Herskowitz provides complimentary outings for special needs children
several times a year. Past excursions have included visits to a bowling
alley, the movies and pot luck suppers. The trips are open to any family
with a special needs child. “These group experiences are so important
for families who value the opportunity for their children to interact with
others,” she said.
